401 Road Conditions After Accident Brighton, Eastern Ontario — Highway 401 has been shut down in both directions today after a series of multiple collisions involving an estimated 50 vehicles in the region between Shannonville and Brighton, police and traffic officials confirmed.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the crashes began in the westbound lanes near St. Hilaire Road in Trenton and continued through the stretch between Glen Miller Road and Wallbridge Loyalist Road, with collisions reported in both directions of the east–west highway.
Emergency crews — including police, fire and paramedics — responded to the scene amid snow‑covered roads and low visibility conditions brought on by a winter storm in the area. Authorities have activated an emergency detour route (EDR) to divert traffic and have set up a warming centre at the Trenton Arena for motorists stranded by the closure.
Police reported that no life‑threatening injuries have been confirmed as a result of the crashes so far, though some serious and minor injuries have been assessed by emergency responders.
Drivers are being urged to avoid Highway 401 in the affected area, follow detour signage, and allow extra travel time if travel is necessary elsewhere. The closures are expected to remain in place for an extended period as crews continue clearing vehicles and debris and work toward reopening the highway safely.
This remains an active traffic situation, and updates will be made available as authorities release further information.
